My Role In Our Great Nation

I played an important role in the building our nation. In 1773 I became a member of the Virginia Commitee of Correspondence. I was chosen as a Virginia representative for the first Continental Congress in 1774 and served until 1779, and was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1775 I became a Colonel of militia in Westermoreland County ,VA , where I was born. In June of 1776 I proposed to the Continental Congress that we declare our independence from England, the Congress agreed and the Revolution began. Due to my wife being ill, I did not get to write the Declaration of Independence as planned and Thomas Jefferson took over. In 1784 I served as the 6th President of the United States in Congress assembled under the Articles of Confederation until 1785. I also served as the Virginia State Senator from 1789-1792. I retired from office in 1792 when I began to feel ill and died 2 years later.
